Information security best practices

  •  Always use active, up-to-date antivirus software.
  • Avoid sharing sensitive data on social media, including personal information about yourself or other people (complete birthdate, address, etc.).
  • Secure your electronic devices with a password and never leave mobile devices unattended in a public place.
  • Clear your browser’s cache.
  • Close your session as soon as you finish using an online service, or close all browser windows.

Netiquette Policy

Université Laval’s social media accounts, including our accounts on Facebook, X (Twitter), Instagram, and LinkedIn, are great places to ask questions and share your university-related experiences. All your comments and posts will be read and considered, so feel free to voice your opinion and have discussions.

Though we encourage freedom of expression, we do ask you to show respect and courtesy in all your interactions. Comments and other posts on our platforms are moderated and managed in accordance with this Netiquette Policy.

It applies to all social media users who interact with our accounts, including Université Laval students. Université Laval’s management, faculty members, unit personnel, and other staff must refer to the netiquette policy for staff members available on Université Laval’s intranet.

Rules

We ask social media users to respect the following rules, which govern all communications on Université Laval’s social media accounts:

  • Be polite, courteous, and respectful at all times and towards all people
  • Respect the opinions, beliefs, and values of others, and avoid all forms of insult
  • Use correct grammar, spelling, and typography, and avoid writing in capital letters, which is the online equivalent of shouting and can come across as aggressive
  • Promote fairness for all users
  • Resolve any conflicts by email or private message, not in public forums such as comment sections

Policy for managing comments and other posts

We reserve the right to edit or delete a user’s comment or post, without notice, if it contains any of the following:

  • Offensive, discriminatory, disparaging, hateful, defamatory, racist, xenophobic, homophobic, sexist, vulgar, inappropriate, abusive, disrespectful, or coarse language, at Université Laval’s sole discretion
  • Any form of advertising or solicitation
  • False, incomplete, incorrect, or misleading information
  • Personal information about a third party, such as a phone number, email address, or any other confidential information
  • Vulgar, obscene, or malicious language
  • Promotion of any kind of illegal activities
  • Irrelevant, confusing, overly long, repetitive, or off-topic content
  • Unintelligible or pointless content
  • Any form of harassment or intimidation
  • Violation of Université Laval’s copyright or other intellectual property rights, or those of a third party
  • Violation of a third party’s privacy
  • Hyperlink to a website, unless it complies with this Netiquette Policy and the content is deemed relevant (please note that we are not responsible for the content of websites to which a comment or other post may redirect users)

We will delete any commercial or political content. We will also remove any comments or other posts by fake accounts or anonymous profiles as soon as we become aware of such accounts or profiles. We will ban anyone using a fake account or multiple identities as soon as we become aware of their actions. We reserve the right to ban anyone who violates this Netiquette Policy from any and all Université Laval social media accounts.

Please note that the views expressed by social media users on Université Laval’s accounts do not necessarily reflect those of Université Laval, its management, faculty members, unit personnel, or other staff. We cannot be held responsible for the content posted by social media users and therefore accept no liability for it.

If you choose to post a testimonial, endorsement, or any other statement based on opinion or preference, make sure your content reflects a true and reasonably current opinion, is based on adequate information, and clearly discloses any relationship you have with Université Laval (e.g., employment relationship, financial compensation, or any other benefit or incentive likely to affect the weight or credibility of your content).

Staying safe online

Keep in mind that when you post a comment or any other content on a page, group, profile, account, or forum, whether public or private, any personal information you share about yourself or another person could be copied and shared elsewhere. Excessively sharing personal information on social media platforms can expose you to identity theft and even threaten your physical safety.

Here are some tips for staying safe when using social media:

  • Protect your profile with a strong, unique password
  • Set up two-factor authentication (2FA) on all your accounts wherever possible
  • Check your privacy settings on the social media applications you use to limit the visibility of what you post. Review those settings periodically, as privacy management options change frequently.
  • Keep your location private by avoiding sharing sensitive personal information (such as your home address and whereabouts), and by taking into account geolocation features on smartphones and digital cameras, which can reveal the exact place you took a photo. Although some social media platforms remove this information when content is posted, it can still be stored and used for other purposes

Université Laval reserves the right to change this Netiquette Policy at any time without notice or liability to you or any other person.

Thank you for being part of our community. We look forward to hearing from you!

If you have any questions about this Netiquette Policy or wish to report a breach, please contact us at mediassociaux@br.ulaval.ca.
