Université Laval appalled by the terrorist attack at Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec
Québec City, January 30, 2017 – The Université Laval community is appalled by the tragic and terrible events that occurred yesterday evening at Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec, only a few kilometres from the campus.
«Today, our community is in shock,» said Rector Denis Brière. «We are devastated for the families and friends of the victims, for the University's Muslim community, our students, our professors, our researchers, staff, and friends. I have no words in the face of such cruel events, which we all condemn forcefully and unequivocally this morning.»
«On behalf of myself and the entire University administration, I wish to offer my most sincere condolences and express our heartfelt sympathy,» the Rector said. «For the members of our community who have lost loved ones, our hearts and thoughts are with you.»
Security measures were immediately stepped up at Université Laval in the wake of this deplorable event to ensure the campus is safe. «Additional security guards have been deployed to ensure the security of all members of our community on campus. We remain vigilant and resolute and will continue to cooperate with the Québec City and Montréal police, as well as the RCMP and Sureté du Québec,» said Éric Bauce, Executive Vice Rector in charge of security for Université Laval.
